Fissure Sealants
Fissure Sealants
Fissures are protective coatings that are applied to the pits and grooves of a tooth to protect it from decay. Fissures are white in colour and last several years. Most commonly, they are applied to the teeth of children who are at high risk of developing cavities.
Fissures are an effective form of cavity prevention in the grooves of teeth. 75% of decay starts in the pits and fissures of the molars as deep grooves are difficult to clean with a toothbrush. The straight forward procedure is done under rubber dam isolation and takes 30-40 minutes. No anaesthetic is necessary, and the procedure includes carefully cleaning out and conditioning the grooves and applying a sealant that is set with a curing light.
